Betty Marie (Ashby) Buchanan

Betty Marie Buchanan, longtime Seminole, Oklahoma resident, passed away on September 3, 2021 at the age of 85. She was born August 4, 1936 in Maud (Wolf), Oklahoma to Walter Andrew Ashby and Eva Lenora (Johnson) Ashby. She attended Wolf School and later attended Bowlegs School where she graduated. She married B.W. “Buck” Buchanan on June 5, 1954 at the First Presbyterian Church in Seminole. She spent most of her life in Seminole County. She and Buck moved around quite a lot in the early years of their marriage as Buck was working for the railroad.

Betty worked as a bookkeeper for Dacus Insurance Agency in Seminole and was Account Executive, Public Relations and Assistant Manager at KSLE Radio Station. Betty loved the Lord and was very involved in her church, Refuge Worship Center of Holdenville, Oklahoma. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women of Seminole. She really loved spending time with Buck, family and friends at the lake. Betty spent many hours working in her yard and really enjoyed her flowers. She also loved coming home with a great bargain! She loved her cat “Smokey”. Something Betty would often do was to pluck a wayward hair out of Buck’s head…(“ploink!”) Ouch! Betty Marie!? Which gave everyone a chuckle, except for Buck!

The kids were very excited to see THIS home room mother coming with her “fancy cupcakes” in her daughters’ grade school days. Betty to the rescue! She was a favorite sponsor on band trips as she would come well-prepared with anything that might be needed. She really enjoyed family get togethers and playing cards and games. She had many friends. “A lot o’ y’all be ‘memberin’…. homemade hot rolls with butta”…yummm!

Betty was a very dedicated, loving Mom and a caring person. Her close family would fondly smile and shake their heads when they thought about how often Betty felt the need to fix Buck’s hair for ?him?...(smile)!

Left to cherish Betty’s memory are her daughters; Jan Newman and Karen Anderson and her husband Jody, who Betty and Buck loved just like a son, sister-in-law; Susie, grandchildren; Elisa and husband Kurt, Clay and wife Laura and Jan's daughter; Joy and husband Daiki and great grandchildren; Garrett, Emma, Macey, Ian, Peter and Jack.

Private family services were held for Betty on Saturday, September 11 at 6:30 p.m. at Wolf Cemetery in Seminole County, Oklahoma.

The family does not wish to receive flowers, but a donation to your favorite charity in Betty's memory is welcomed.

Arrangements were under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma.
