Konawa resident, Vernon Dale Peters, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 20, 2026 at his granddaughter’s home at lake Eufaula at the age of 97. Vernon was born on January 11, 1929 in Macomb, OK to John A. and Ruby (Ritchie) Peters. He was the second generation born in his family homestead in Macomb. He went to school in Maud and graduated from Ceres High School in 1947.
Vernon married Teresa Fae Pratt on June 27, 1948 in Shawnee, OK. He worked as a gas station attendant until he began his career at OG&E. The returned to the Konawa and Maud area in 1970 moving from Bethany, OK. Vernon worked as a control room supervisor for OG&E. In 1972 he bought land in Konawa and built his house which he owned until 2025. Vernon walked his farm two or three times a week checking on fences and cattle. Denice remembers when she went to visit her grandparents, in the evenings, they would sit on the porch swing listening to records and signing along with the music. Every weekend if the weather was nice Vernon would grill steaks or hamburgers and after dinner the kids would take turns sitting on top of the ice cream maker while the men took turns churning the ice cream. Vernon enjoyed watching OU football and girls softball, fishing and tinkering with vehicles. He spent his last couple years enjoying the lake life sitting watching life going on.
Vernon is survived by his daughter, Mollie and Dale Herndon of Newcastle, OK; three grandchildren, Verna “Denice” and Chester Jones, Nathaniel Banks and Kelly Marie Herndon and Jospeh Charles and Krystal Herndon; great grandchildren, Chelsey Dawn Herndon, Charles E. Jones and Jourdian T. Herndon and many other family and friends.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Teresa Peters; two brothers, Jack Peters and Glen Peters and sister, LaVerne Gunton.
Viewing will be from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 and Wednesday, March 25, 2026 at Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, OK.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, OK. Kelly Herndon will be officiating.
