Sonia Rena Scott, 63, of Seminole, Oklahoma, passed away Friday, May 1, 2026, in Oklahoma City.
Born on October 29, 1962, in Seminole, Sonia was the daughter of Herbert and Elizabeth (Littlejohn) Gunter. A lifelong resident of Seminole, she cherished her community and roots. As a young woman, she spent her summers helping her father at a local swimming pool, where she assisted with swim lessons. She graduated from Seminole High School with the Class of 1980 and went on to attend East Central University, earning her bachelor’s degree in education.
On July 23, 1988, Sonia married the love of her life, Tom Scott, in Seminole. They shared 25 years of marriage before his passing on August 20, 2013. Together, they built a life centered on family, service, and community, including working side by side at Paul’s Place Steakhouse, where Sonia dedicated many weekends as a hostess.
Sonia devoted 41 years to education, teaching 4 years in Wewoka and 37 years in Seminole. Her impact as an educator reached generations of students, and her dedication continued until her retirement in 2025.
Deeply involved in her community, Sonia was a longtime member and officer of ESA and remained active until retirement. She also participated in SACT and OEA, later joining OREA. Her service extended to many groups, including co-founding the Widows Group, and participating in PEO, Bunco, and the Maple Grove Cemetery Committee. She also shared her musical talents as the pianist at Cheyarha Presbyterian Church.
Sonia’s faith was central to her life. She followed Jesus with a heart for loving and caring for others. She found joy in simple pleasures—collecting Peanuts memorabilia, especially Snoopy and Charlie Brown, spending time with her grandchildren, fishing with Colby, visiting the beach with Katie in Charleston, playing games, working puzzles, and sharing laughter with friends and family on the patio.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Tom” Scott; her mother, Liz Gunter; and her grandparents.
Sonia is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Colby Scott and Kourtney of Kyle, Texas; her daughter and son-in-law, Katie Scott and David Hellmig II of Goose Creek, South Carolina; her beloved grandchildren, Hays Scott and Kora Scott; and her sister and brother-in-law, Carrie Nault and Kyle of Ardmore; along with many other family members and friends.
Pallbearers will be Colby Scott, Dana Scott, John Bailey, Rodney May, David Hellmig, and Austen Harvey. Honorary pallbearers are Mike Yip and Kory Brinlee.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that charitable donations be made in Sonia’s name to Interfaith Social Ministries, P.O. Box 1602, Seminole, OK 74868, or to Charleston BCM, P.O. Box 71486, North Charleston, SC 29415.
