Chares Farris Hopper was born on December 3, 1935 in Sapulpa, OK and passed from this life on August 1, 2026 peacefully at his home in Maud, OK at the age of 90. His family moved to Maud when he was 1 ½ years old and he spent the majority of his life there.

Charles served in the US Army from 1958 to 1962 including the time he was called back to service during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He served as a heavy weapons infantryman.

Charles traveled the country as a young man working as a pipeliner. It was during that time he met a waitress in Waynesburg, PA who ended up being the love of his life. He married Shirley Ann Kelley on August 24, 1962 and they were married for 41 years until her death on September 7, 2003. Charles spent the majority of his career in the oil field working first for St. Louis Well Service and then for Joe Mills Well Service of Seminole, OK until he was forced to retire after an oilfield accident on July 5, 1983.

Charles loved spending time with family and friends at Lake Eufaula while enjoying his passion for fishing for crappie and catfish. There was no better fisherman than Charles Hopper.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Farris and Juanita Catherine Hopper; wife, Shirley Ann (Kelley) Hopper; infant son, Charles Merle Hopper; son, Micheal Farris Hopper; brothers, Wilford, Raymond, Joe and Clarence Hopper and sister, Ora Alice Glover.

Charles is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Christi and Eddie Riddle Jr.; his beloved granddaughters, Emilee Avants and husband, Jordan, Allison Fonseca and husband, Kevin; brother, John Hopper; sister, Juanita Phillips plus a host of other family and friends.

Charles’ family would like to thank Visting Angels Home Care, Frontier Hospice and dear friend Kathy Lewis for such wonderful care and help that they provided.

Viewing will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3, 2026 and from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4, 2026 at Swearingen Funeral Home in Maud, OK.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5, 2026 at Trinity Baptist Church in Maud, OK with James Hopper and Pastor Butch Bradley officiating. Interment will follow at Cummings Cemetery in Maud, OK.
