Bobby Dean Berry July 9, 1937 – June 18, 2025

Bobby Dean Berry was born at home in rural Stephens County, Oklahoma, on July 9, 1937. He was the son of Robert Isaac Berry and Annie Helen Berry (née Dean). Tragically, Bob never met his father, who died of complications from appendicitis just before he was born. Life was not easy for “the widow woman’s son,” but through strong character, quiet determination, an outstanding work ethic, and the steadfast moral guidance of his devout Christian mother, Bob grew into a young man known for his integrity and willingness to work hard. Many in the community stepped forward to support Bob during his youth and their kindness left a lasting impression on him, and as he matured and opportunities came his way, Bob never forgot those early acts of generosity and he spent his life extending the same helping hand to others that had once been extended to him.

The rigors of farm life tempered Bob's strength in both body and mind. He excelled in football, earning accolades in high school and a scholarship to play at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Durant, where he also completed his bachelor’s degree and in his senior year, he was elected Student Body President. On December 19, 1962, Bob married the love of his life, Patsy Jean Berry (née Griffith). They were married for 62 years until Patsy's passing in August 2024. Together, they raised four children: Paula Dawson (deceased), Robert Berry of Burnet, Texas, Tamara Robertson of Wimberley, Texas, and Christopher Berry of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Their legacy includes nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Bob’s professional journey took him from Chamber of Commerce positions in Atoka, Wewoka, and Duncan, Oklahoma, to Wharton, Texas, and eventually into association leadership. He served as Assistant Manager of the Tennessee Medical Association before becoming, at age 31, the youngest Association Executive Director in the U.S. in 1968. He led the Oklahoma Dental Association for 34 years until his retirement at 65. During his tenure, Bob was instrumental in the passage of vital dental legislation and played a key role in the development of the University of Oklahoma’s School of Dentistry. In retirement, Bob embarked on a new venture as owner of Cash Western Store in Seminole, Oklahoma — a business founded in 1937 by his father-in-law, Homer Griffith. The store remained not only a successful enterprise but also a beloved local gathering place.

Known for his kindness and humility, Bob was a pillar of his community, and he served on the Seminole Chamber of Commerce and as a member of the Rotary Club and he cherished delivering Holiday meals. Friends, neighbors, and customers alike were drawn to his warmth and wisdom. His store became a place where people came not just to shop but to share stories, debate current events, reminisce about old times, and listen to Bob recite one of his many original poems. A gifted orator and poet, Bob’s words often stirred both laughter and reflection. Upon hearing of his passing, one longtime customer-turned-friend shared, “They don’t make men like Bob anymore. His death marks, for many, the passing not only of a good man, but of an era.”
