Jonathan Dale Cargill, PhD, 77
October 23, 1941 - May 16, 2019

Jonathan Dale Cargill (Jon) was born in Oklahoma City on October 23, 1941.  His parents were Dale William Cargill and Janet Isabel (Hecker) Cargill, both of whom pre-deceased Jon.  Jon’s dad was a career military man, which gave the Cargill family the opportunity to travel and to live in both Japan and Paris, France.  While in France, Jon and his family traveled to various parts of Europe.  His mother was an avid picture-taker and left a legacy of beautiful photography from both the United States and other parts of the world.  Jon had three brothers, two of whom are still living – Christopher Cargill (Kit) and Timothy Cargill (Tim).  He was pre-deceased by his youngest very special, loving brother, Thomas Nathaniel Cargill (Tom), who had Down’s Syndrome.

Jon attended school in Oklahoma City, Japan, and France.  He graduated from Paris American High School in France.  He and his family returned to Oklahoma City to the family home where Jon had grown up.  There, Jon attended Oklahoma City University (OCU), where he graduated in 1965 with a degree in Psychology and Education.  He then taught Psychology at Harding High School, while pursuing his Master’s Degree from the University of Central Oklahoma (UCO).  He received his Master’s Degree and went on to obtain his Doctorate from the University of Oklahoma (OU).  The entire time Jon worked on his advanced degrees, he worked full time in teaching and counseling.  Jon went on to do a post-doctoral internship with the United States Air Force.  He and his family were stationed at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas, where Jon received a commission as Captain and worked at the base hospital.  After two years, the family returned to Oklahoma City, where Jon began working for the government in Indian Health Services.  He went on to establish his own private practice.  He was a member of the Community of Christ church, where he taught adult Sunday School classes for a number of years.  What some may not have known about Jon was that he was an avid reader and had a passion for music, doing crossword puzzles, and Corvettes.

On November 7, 1962, Jon married Bonnie Wyatt, whom he had known since they were in elementary school together.  They had reconnected at Oklahoma City University.  Bonnie supported Jon throughout his entire education, military internship, and beginning career.  They were married 16 years, and had two wonderful children together, Jon Christopher Cargill, now living in Edmond, Ok, and Shawna-Lisa Kristin (Cargill) Carter now living in Yukon, OK.  In addition to his two children, Jon had a daughter-in-law, Brooke Cargill, son-in-law, Jeff Carter, grandchildren, Sheridan Carter, Landon Cargill, and Addison Howell, and grand-daughter-in-law, Darla Howell.  He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Henry Howell and Maddie Roach.  Jon was truly loved by his family and indeed loved them with all his heart and soul.  Jon’s early marriage was filled with middle-of-the-night sports car jaunts out of state “just for fun,” motorcycle off-road excursions, dancing, beach trips with friends, camping, canoeing, snow skiing, mountain hiking, and both he and Bonnie working hard to obtain their degrees and establish careers.

On May 16, 1980, Jon married Scharleen Asher.  Together, Jon and Scharleen raised her 4 children, Cindy Jo Asher, Joe Cole, Dana Asher, and Darren Bingham.  Additional family included Cindy’s children, Dr. Adam Stephens, his wife Meredith, and their children, Claire and Bryant; Amy Remington, her husband Mikey, and their children, Harper and Haylen; and Zane and Zack Kozel; Joe’s 2 children, Catie Adam Chase and her children Carmella and Anderson, and Marcus Buss, his wife, Sarah, and their sons Landon and Johnathon; Dana Asher; and Darren’s daughter, Darrian and her son Rynek.  Jon was a wonderful “Dad” to Scharleen’s children and a very loved “Granddad” to their children.  Jon and Scharleen lived in Tecumseh and on her family farm in Bethel, OK.  Scharleen pre-deceased Jon on June 14, 2010.  During their marriage, there were many wonderful memories created through family celebrations, outings listening to music, holidays, marriages of children and grandchildren, and births of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Jon truly loved and was loved by his extended family.

On June 9, 2017, Jon married Chong Treat.  They continued living in Bethel.  They were married a very short time when Jon became ill.  He passed away on May 16, 2019, in Oklahoma City from complications following aortal heart and renal artery surgery.

Jon will always be known as a man who loved his family, friends, and co-workers.   He had a zest for life in general and had a unique sense of humor.  His absence will leave a heart-shaped hole in the hearts of his entire family.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Oklahoma with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating.
